It seems like forever ago that I made this, but here I go.....
The first thing I did was go through fabric and scraps to see what would work for my barn. Found some cows that seemed suitable for peeking out a window and strips of red already sewn together.
We have mostly red barns around here. It is a good, classic color and my favorite.
Grabbed some tractor fabric to build around.
The sky would be night when I found the black and white stars and one little moon piece....well, I called it a moon.
Laid out what I had to see where this was going. I was surprised at how big it got without even trying. I had pictures in my head of a silo and fence, but there wasn't really room.
saving that for next time!
Somewhere along the line I messed up and sewed too soon.
My barn has no overhang along the roof. This is when I was going by what I had read in the directions....which were in the computer. I read them, closed the computer, and started sewing.
Maybe if I had a book, laying there, ready to consult for the next step!
I think this is where I will tell you that there is a giveaway. You can win a copy of the book, Build a Barn No Pattern Construction! It will come autographed from the author, Julie S.
Leave a comment and you are in the drawing! Make sure you aren't no-reply, so I can get the mailing information for Julie. I'll do the drawing on Sunday, May 22, 2016.
Having the book right next to you may save you from the same fate!
I made my black sky fabric by adding black to what I had, the stars and moon.
If I had added background before adding the roof line, I would have had overhang.
Live and learn.
It was put together in sections.
The finished block....what I mailed to Julie.
She gave it to [Chris Ballard] who does the most amazing quilting.

I am looking forward to going to Des Moines this fall for the AQS quilt show. All of the SSOBB barns made from the book will be there! I get to see them all in person! I am looking forward to that!
I do not remember how I first met Julie Sefton. Through our blogs, for sure, but when?
I honestly don't remember! I do know she has always been a source of inspiration and encouragement. I see her stuff and think, WOW, she's so good!

And I look at your Captain Amooica, your Jurassic Park quilt, and lots of your others and I say WOW, too -- I don't remember just how we first connected, but I am SO glad we did! Thanks again for being part of the SSOBB adventure!
I love this whimsical block! The cows, the tractor and the moon adds so much interest. The stars are the icing on the cake and make this whole block sing.
I love your fun block - the cows are perfect and the red barn is terrific. Like you I have followed Julie's blog for along time- I know she makes terrific quilts. THanks for the chance to win her new book.
Warmest regards from Alberta,
Anna
I love those peeking cows. And it's a great barn, even without any overhangs!
Wonderful barn, love the cows and the barn pops with the night sky. Thanks for the chance to win.
I think you have a happy barn! Makes me smile thinking those cows like where they live and their farmer man has a nice tractor to drive. Everyone is all snuggled in under the moon and stars to rest up for the night………and of course you know I'm not in the drawing.
Piecing without a pattern is so appealing to me for two reasons. I have trouble understanding patterns and it's always an original. I like my quilts to be artwork. The more the decisions are made for me the less I feel like it truly is mine. Love your barn, overhang or no.
Those cows looking out the windows make your barn so much fun! I really love your night sky and it doesn't matter about the overhang really. Don't enter me in the giveaway, because I have Julie's wonderful book and am looking forward to some barn building of my own!
What a delightful barn! The cows and that moon! A copy of Julie's great book would make my birthday perfect! Thanks for the giveaway. ksb (dot) scott at gmail (dot) com
Interesting barn. Thanks for the chance to see it and win the book. I too, have followed Julie for a long time.
I am not so upset that your barn has no overhang! Not all buildings have an overhang. You certainly compensated well with that clarifying white edging.
I have always loved your barn, with its night sky. And that cow peeking through is too funny.
Thanks for sharing you barn building process! It was fun to see how you placed the various components of your block. Thanks for a chance to win a copy of Julie's book!
Cows peeking at you with the tractor safely in the side shed is the way I remember my Grandfather's barn. Overhang or not it is a fantastic barn! Thank you for sharing.
Love your barn. I grew up in farm country and lived all the barns.
The cows!!!! I LOVE that your barn has cows!!! I just keep falling in love with them all over again!!!
I love the goofy cows and the tractor was just the right size to have in the doorway. Great barn and I love your take on the night sky.
I would love to try these barns, hope I win. The John Deere tractor is a perfect touch.
Such fun to find your blog, Julie. Keep up the good work!
Love all that you do!
I really like how you made your barn in the night. Thanks for the chance to win the book.

I've always loved your free pieced quilts. It may have been me who told Julie about you, can't remember. I love the fun and the energy and joy of this barn. As a charter member of the SSOBB, don't enter me in the giveaway.
How ADORABLE! I love your block.
Love your barn! The stars in the sky really sparkle!
